School of Public Health

Introduction

School of Public Health was founded in 1956, formerly named as the Public Health Teaching and Research Group of Kunming Medical College. In 1978, the Department of Hygiene was set up and renamed as the Department of Preventive Medicine in 1989. In 2001, the School of Public Health was established to replace the department. After decades of construction and development, it has now become a senior talent training base and research center for public health and preventive medicine in Yunnan Province, integrating teaching, scientific research and social services. As a whole, there are 84 full-time faculty members, 18 with senior title and 36 with vice-senior title. There are 18 doctoral supervisors and 94 master's supervisors (including 43 extramural supervisors).

School of Public Health has 1 authorized academic doctorate discipline and2 authorized academic master’s disciplinein Public Health and Preventive Medicine and 2 professional master's disciplines. Public Health and Preventive Medicine has been selected as one of the first-class construction disciplines in Yunnan Province. The school has 13 provincial and ministerial platforms, such as the Pilot School of HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education, Yunnan Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center for Public Health and Disease Prevention and Control, and Yunnan Research Center for Health Policy.

The School has 4 undergraduate programs in Preventive Medicine, Health Inspection and Quarantine, Public Service Management, and Food Hygiene and Nutrition. Preventive Medicine is a national first-class program. Health Inspection and Quarantine, Food Hygiene and Nutrition are provincial first-class programs. Currently, 1,446 students are studying at school, including 1,157 undergraduates and 289 postgraduates.

In the past five years, the school has undertaken more than 150 projects at all levels, such as major projects of philosophical and social science research of the Ministry of Education and the projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China, and more than 20 scientific research awards has beenobtained. The school has established good cooperative relationship with universities and research institutes in the US, the UK and Thailand.

Existing departments, institutes, centers and offices are as follows: Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Department of Environmental Health and Occupational Medicine, Department of Nutrition and Food Science, Department of Community Medicine/Department of Pediatrics and Maternal and Child Health, Department of Health Service Management and Health Economics, Laboratory Center of Preventive Medicine, Health Sciences Institute, Preventive Medicine Training Center, Office of Yunnan General Medicine Training Center, Administrative Office , Office of Student Affairs, Office of Teaching Management, Office of Discipline Research and Postgraduate Management.


Programs

1. Doctoral Degree Programs

The School offers the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (since 2021) which includes five research directions. To obtain this research doctoral degree, students must complete at least 20 credits and pass the thesis defense during 3-6 full academic year. The required courses includeScientific Research and Ethics, Health Policy and Health Economics, andProgram Planning and Evaluation Research, etc. 

2. Master’s Degree Programs

The School offers the Master of Medicine (M.M.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) Programs in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (since 2011) which include six research directions (Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Maternal and Child Health, Occupational and Environmental Health, Nutrition and Food Safety, Toxicology, Social Medicine and Health Service Management). To obtain these research master’s degree, students must complete at least 34 credits and pass the thesis defense for 3 full academic year. The required courses includeField Research and Methods,Advanced Epidemiology, andHealth Program Design, Management and Evaluation, etc.

The School also offers the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program (since 2009) which includes three research directions (Maternal & Child Health and Population Health, Health Service Management, and Disease Prevention and Control). To obtain this professional master’s degree, students must complete at least 30 credits for 3 full academic year.

3. Bachelor’s Degree Programs

The major of Preventive Medicine is the national first-class undergraduate major, and the provincial key and special undergraduate major. It aims to produce the public health professionals who understand the complex interrelation between biological and social determinants of health that affect human health and well-being. The graduates will work for public health services who can formulate and implement health policies and activities to cope with public health issues and promote population health. It is a five-year program for a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine. The required courses include Physiology, Biochemistry, Infectious Diseases, Health Microbiology, Basic Toxicology, Epidemiology, Health Statistics, Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Occupational Medicine, etc.

The major of Food Safety and Nutrition is one of the longest-standing majors in universities in Yunnan Province. It aims to produce the public health professionals working for southwestern areas where multiple ethnic minorities live. Students will understand the concepts of Food, Nutrition and Hygiene and apply them in the practice of public health. It is a four-year program for a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine. The required courses includeMolecular Medicine,Human Morphology and Disease Fundamentals, Pathogens and Immunology, Clinical Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Food Safety and Nutrition, etc.

The major of Health Inspection and Quarantine aims to produce the advanced technology applications specialist with the basic knowledge and operational skills of preventive medicine, health physical and chemical testing and biological testing and other aspects. The graduates will have the ability to detect harmful factors affecting human health in air, water, and food and cosmetics, monitor health status in the workplace and public places. It is a four-year program for a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine. The required courses includeInorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pathogenic Biology and Immunology, Analytical Chemistry, Instrumental Analysis, Biomaterial Testing, Health Quarantine, etc.

The major of Public Service Management is the first batch of programs to recruit liberal arts students in Kunming Medical University in 2002. The graduates will have broad-based management skills that lead to careers across many sectors, including nonprofit, governmental agencies, higher education and health care. It is a four-year program for a Bachelor’s degree in Management. The required courses includeFundamentals of Management, Public Economics, Public Services Management, Financial Management of Public Organizations, Public Policy, Health Services Management, etc.
