昆明医科大学建校初期就成立了外语教学组，主要以俄语教学为主，七十年代恢复以英语教学为主导的外语教研室。外语部原隶属基础医学院，2001年独立成立外语部，主要承担学校十五个专业本科生和研究生公共英语/法语课程教学任务。
外语部现设有四个教研室、一个语言实验中心和一个行政办公室。其中公共英语教研室主要承担本科生和研究生公共英语课程教学任务，专业英语教研室主要负责专业英语选修课程教学任务。2010年又新增了“小语种教研室”。此外，公共英语教研室多年来一直承担云南省卫生厅援外医疗队出国前外语培训和翻译人员派遣任务，为云南省援外工作做出了应有的贡献。
法语教研室实行五年制的法语班教学，头两个学年实行公共法语强化学习，打下语言基础，从第三学年起，除保持公共法语课外，加入医学法语课，一直延续到五年级。 截至2011年8月，外语部共有教职工45人，其中专任教师39人，行政管理人员2人，实验技术人员4人。是一支富有激情和充满活力的师资队伍。在专任教师中，教授1人，副教授14人，讲师15人，助教10人。其中具有硕士学位以上的教师9人，在职攻读硕士教师7人，三年内硕士占教师队伍的总人数比例可望超过50％。近年来，外语部整体学术水平、科研能力有了较大的提高。目前承担省教育厅英语课程建设项目4项，学校教学改革项目1项，教师发表论文90余篇，主编、参编教材18部，多位教师被评为校级优秀教师。
2004-2006年度，外语部获学校“三育人”先进集体，英语教研室被评为先进教研室受到院级表彰。 2009年外语部教师，在全国教学比赛中有一人得了三等奖，在全省青年教师教学比赛中有一人获二等奖，另一人获得三等奖。为了给学生提供交流和展示个性的平台，外语部与教务处积极配合，定期组织我校学生参与“CCTV杯”全国大学英语演讲比赛、全国大学生英语竞赛（NECCS）选拔赛、“外教社杯”英语写作大赛选拔赛和云南省高校英语写作大赛选拔赛，取得了较好的成绩，为学校争得了荣誉。
外语部在学院办学指导思想的指引下，根据学院的定位和发展思路，也为自己设计了一条符合学校整体发展的路子。外语部将以自己独特的优势在面向全国，辐射东南亚，提升知名度上做出自己的努力。
Introduction to the Foreign Language Department
The Foreign Language Department was set up as early as the establishment of Kunming Medical College. It was first called the Foreign Language Teaching Group and focused on teaching Russian. In the 1970’s, it began to also emphasize teaching English and was renamed the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Department. In 2001, it was separated from the Basic Medical Department and undertook teaching English and French to undergraduate and post-graduate students majoring in 15 specialties. During this change, it got its present name.
The Foreign Language Department consists of four teaching and research sections, a language laboratory center and an administrative office. In 2010, we set up a new section—The Thai Language Teaching Section. The College English Teaching and Research Section mainly handles teaching English to undergraduate and post-graduate non-English majors. The Medical English Teaching and Research Section primarily oversees the medical English elective courses. In addition, this section has also taken on the language training program for foreign medical aid teams sponsored by the Yunnan Provincial Medical Department. We dispatch interpreters and make other contributions to the foreign aid program.
The French Teaching and Research Section is responsible for the first two-year French followed by three years of medical French. By August 2011, the total staff includes 39 full-time teachers (six of whom also hold administrative posts), two administrative staff, and three laboratory technicians. Among the full-time teachers, there is one professor, fourteen associate professors, fifteen lecturers, and ten assistant lecturers, nine of these have a master degree and some are doing an on-the-job post-graduate teaching program. The projected percentage of post-graduates in the teaching body is 50% over the next three years. In recent years, the overall academic level and scientific research ability has greatly improved. Four English course construction projects hosted by the Provincial Education Commission are currently underway. The teachers have published over seventy professional papers and edited and co-edited more than eighteen textbooks. Many of these teachers have been awarded the title of “Excellent Teachers”.
For the last three years (2004-2006), the Foreign Language Department was awarded the “San Yu Ren” Advanced Collective Award and the College English Teaching and Research Section was named “The Advanced Department”. In 2009, we sent two young teachers to take part in the nationwide English teaching competition. One of them got the third prize. In order to offer students a platform to communicate and show their individuality, the Foreign Language Department, together with the Teaching Affairs Office, regularly organizes students to participate in the CCTV National College English Speech Contest and the NECCS English Writing Contest hosted by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The students have done well and been awarded honors for the College.
